Hamil, Thomas speakers for chamber

Speakers and hosts Thursday for the monthly Lake Tawakoni Regional Chamber of Commerce luncheon were Dr. Gene Hamil and Dr. Sheela Thomas of Parkway Family Dental.

Dr. Hamil spoke first and reviewed his background, heavily sprinkled with humor. He grew up in Oklahoma and earned his first degree from Oklahoma State University before a move to Texas and his dental degree from Baylor. He spent 25 years in Marshall and 16 years in Hallsville before moving to Quinlan.

“I’ve been here in this area about seven years. I have really enjoyed it. The camaraderie of this area is different in many ways. As far as the patients I’ve seen and the people I’ve helped, it’s truly been tremendous,” he said.

Hamil entered the U.S. Air Force after dental school and was stationed at Sioux City, Iowa, with NORAD where he was charged with removal of wisdom teeth. “As a result of it, today I have removed over 24,000 wisdom teeth in my career,” he quipped.

Hamil recalled the “Pueblo Incident” that occurred while he was in the Air Force when the Navy intelligence spy ship USS Pueblo was attacked and captured by North Korean forces Jan. 23, 1968.
