East Tawakoni seeks cleanup grant, reviews upcoming events

The East Tawakoni City Council authorized Mayor Johnnie LaPrade to request grant funding for the city’s annual cleanup and heard plans for upcoming events Tuesday night at its regular monthly meeting.

The cleanup grant is funded by the East Texas Council of Governments through its Regional Solid Waste Grants Program.

• The oath of office was administered to new East Tawakoni Economic Development Corporation board member Vicky Marshall by Mayor LaPrade.

• The annual contract with Rains County Appraisal District was approved to provide assessment and collection of property taxes for the city.

• A contingency plan was approved for repairs and rehabilitation of the city’s 75,000-gallon water tower in the event the city did not receive the expected grant by the fall of 2018. The contingency plan is a requirement of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).

The city was not approved for the 2016-17 cycle of grants but is expected to be approved for the 2017-18 period.

• Mayor LaPrade said the Spirit of East Tawakoni would host the annual Trunk or Treat event Oct. 31 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the police department, located across the street from city hall.

She said the Thanksgiving luncheon would not be held this year because of smaller participation over the past few years.
