Sheriff’s detention officer killed in wreck In off-duty accident between Quinlan, Terrell on SH 34

A 33-year-old Quinlan man was killed Saturday when his pickup truck collided with an 18-wheeler tanker truck, according to Department of Public Safety Sgt. Kyle Bradford.

Hunt County Sheriff Randy Meeks said in a statement Saturday, “It is with a heavy heart the Hunt County Sheriff’s Office confirms that Detention Officer Billy Attaway, 33, lost his life this morning in a motor vehicle accident.”

Sgt. Bradford said, “The tanker truck was traveling north on 34, and the pickup truck was traveling south. For an as-of-yet-to-be-determined reason, the pickup truck traveled in the northbound lane and was struck by tanker truck.”

He said Attaway was pronounced deceased on scene. The driver of the tanker truck was not injured.

“The investigation is ongoing, and no other information is available at this time,” Bradford said.

Sheriff Meeks said, “This is without a doubt a very dark day for the Hunt County Sheriff’s Office and the family of Billy Attaway. I don’t have the words to express my grief, and I ask that everyone respects the privacy of the family during this tragedy. I am not going to speculate on the accident or the family’s wishes at this time, but I want them to know we are here for them,” the sheriff said.
