Students from QISD earn Google Cloud Certification

QISD students at FHS were recently invited to participate in a new professional certification program from Google and six earned recognition! AV Productions instructor Galen Rosenberg and QISD Technology Trainer Peggy Clore administered the test to 38 students from the Arts/AV career cluster on Wednesday, Dec. 12, and FHS students Damon Poynter, Ethan Benton, Kamilah Arvizo, Joseph Shanklin, Nicholas Conaghan, and Riley Sandoval earned Google Cloud: G Suite Certification. The test measures the ability to use all of Google's G Suite office applications separately, together, and in a collaborative mode with other users. The school district makes extensive use of Google's educational technology resources, including Chromebooks and Applied Digital Skills curriculum, and that use merited an invitation from the technology giant to participate in the program as part of the pilot testing group.

"Our students use Google's tools each day to find content. The next step is teaching them to be producers of content," commented Mr. Rosenberg. "This certification program nicely dovetails with what we're doing in the classroom to promote digital literacy and requires the students to actually complete job tasks to prove their knowledge. It's a thrill to get to be part of this before the general public and provide feedback that will be used to develop the test, and it's especially great to see that our students are completing work at the same level that adults are expected to handle!"

QISD will be applying to join the Google for Education Reference District Program in 2019 which recognizes school districts for superior use of Google for Education tools in innovative and impactful ways in the classroom. This successful certification pilot will be a factor in the application. QISD teachers and IT/Curriculum staff will evaluate this session's results and determine if it will be offered to students again in the coming years. It may join the three other professional certifications provided in the Arts/AV career cluster and the multiple career pathways offered at Ford High School - including public service, health science, information technology, agriculture, automotive service, and cosmetology - that help ensure all of the district's graduates have a clear pathway to success.
